A minister in Aberfoyle, Robert Kirk, gathered his parishioners remarkable accounts of fairies and other beings of "a middle nature betwixt man and angel”. He also investigated local poltergeists, witches and cases of second sight. It was said that after his death "he was carried off by them (the wee folk) and his headstone stands over an empty tomb" (Cheape, H, 2004). The original manuscript was left upon Kirk’s death in 1692, and not published until 1815, in a print run of 100 copies. Here is a desirable edition of this crucial text of the fairy tradition.
